one of the founding figures of the jamaican music industry, arthur duke reid produced many of the classics of the ska, rock steady and early reggae eras. and when, in the mid-1970s, dub music took hold, he was able to call upon one of the most talented soundmen in the business, errol brown. utilising some of reid’s most memorable rhythms, performed by the producer’s legendary session crew, tommy mccook & the supersonics, brown created some of the finest dub mixes of the period, a dozen of which were gathered on treasure dub vol. 1, one of the most acclaimed collections from the golden age of reggae.

so gerd and philipp were due to play xoyo one saturday night and the club is 6 minutes from my studio so i suggested we go there first to make tunes for a few hours. we made 2 songs that night and one of them is ‘reach out’. gerd did the drums on my 808, philipp wrote the beautiful lead part on my obxa and i did the bass in my cs80. i added the words a couple of weeks later, they are inspired by leonard cohen’s letter to his muse marianne ihlen on her deathbed. (joe goddard) including fantastic remixes by erol alkan and osborne.

re-issue of the 1978 dub classic from errol brown & the revolutionaries. dub like it used to be from the high note and gay feet labels. a selection of rocking rhythms from the revolutionaries masterminded by jamaica’s finest female record producer, mrs sonia pottinger, and mixed by duke reid’s nephew, errol brown, chief engineer at the legendary treasure isle studio.

italian producer piero pirupa’s musical cv is nothing short of impressive. so it’s no surprise that his next production has found a home on damian lazarus’ crosstown rebels, enlisting the vocal talents of new york’s mr.v. influenced by the sounds of 80s and 90s chicago, pirupa worked tirelessly on this ep to reach a version he was happy with. after seeing the reaction from dancefloors around the world, he decided to send it to carl cox and damian lazarus. we must be (the piano track) breathes new life into today’s dance music with a message from a bygone era. it harks back to the golden age of house music with its lush piano topline and positive message sung by mr.v. happiness simply emanates from this production. with lyrics such as “we must be all in this together, we must live to respect one another” and “this is the plan to make us unified” it takes clubbing back to a time when everyone came together on the dancefloor regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation or religion.

crafted in the style of old school dancehall clashing, “veteran” is a mixture of classic heavyweight dancehall lyrics and a new school flow. the tune is set to be a timeless banger aiming to keep the dancehall massive rocking and swinging day and night. inspired by the riddim and sounds of blind prophet, clinton sly is ready to run the sound system! slowing down the tempo to 120bpm, blind prophet delivers a heavy dose of dubwise for the b-side. “hugh dub” starts off with a mutated vocal and quickly drops into a tuff steppers riddim. a distorted bassline and thumping kick drive the track. accompanied by plucked guitars, organ skanks and dub fx it’s a sound system stomper for sure!

seb zitos seven dials imprint serves up its third offering with jamie trench & khalil anthony continuing to champion the early garage flavours that the label is fast becoming known for. what was missing transports you back to the 90s with that ukg groove, bumping sub bass goodness and kahlil s gritty vocals. the dub mix leaves only a small portion of the vocals in the mix, chopping them todd the god style and giving the shuffling garage rhythm more room to breathe. on the b side label head, seb zito, switches things into peak-time roller territory, dampening the kick whilst putting more emphasis on the hats, dubbing out vocal snippets, adding acid flurries and throwing in an epic echoed breakdown. all three mixes make a clear nod to the past, whilst firmly setting themselves in the present gold again from seven dials.

krikor is back on the label with a new six tracker. following up his pacific alley lp from last year, we now get pacific alley in dub, taking tracks from the lp and re-working with ample echo and new riddims strictly made for the dancefloor. spacious pads and linn drum claps are run through the board as voices ping back and forth in the chamber, equally blissed out and trippy turning these tracks into completely new freaked out compositions. summer jams guaranateed. includes download card.

(clear 10 inch vinyl) the second release to be pressed into totems slabs of 10-inch vinyl is from techno impresario luke slaters l.b. dub corp moniker. slater has been operating as a pioneer, with a full deck of aliases, throughout the genres many corners since the days when techno was a newborn phenomenon. the stripped back sounds of l.b. dub corps last releases on the imprint have resounded naturally within the psychotropic space carved out by stroboscopic artefacts.

some time around 20 years ago, the artist known as dub surgeon made an absorbing album of beautiful dub infused with ambiance, found sounds and horizontal rhythms. the lost future was recorded at the former amsterdam film academy where dub surgeon. the recording engineer for the project was ricardo villalobos. dub surgeon and ricardo villalobos then mastered it together, putting it through several vintage mixers and recording it to 2 inch tape. then, tragedy struck: a storm surged and ignited a fire that ravaged the studio. the master copy was thought to have been lost forever. dub surgeon stopped making music and disappeared into the shadows after just two eps on future dub in 2002/3. but one day 15 years later, totally out of the blue, he received a demo of the lost future. pay attention to this, it said. attached was a demo version of the long lost album and now, finally, it has a perfect and impossibly poetic home on dubais ark to ashes, which is named in homage to the story of lee scratch perry burning down his black ark studio to rid it of demons. sounding as fresh as ever, the lost future is an authentic dub experience with a story as special as the music itself.

berlin based electronic mainstay marquis hawkes has announced details of his second lp ‘the marquis of hawkes’, due out 24th august 2018 on fabric’s in-house label houndstooth (home to call super, aïsha devi, special request and more). ahead of this, hawkes will also release a new single featuring acclaimed uk soul singer jamie lidell. the single, entitled ‘we should be free’, features, alongside the low slung but melancholic original version, three reinterpretations of the song, remixed by hawkes himself. both this, and the essential previous single, “don’t u”, which featured the vocal talents of ursula rucker, will appear on the forthcoming album.

teatime dub encounters is the result of a few clandestine hotel room recording sessions, that began a few weeks after underworld and iggy pop had each released their last albums (barbara, barbara we face a shining future and post pop depression respectively) on the same day (march 18th2016). it is neither historical or a tribute to past work. it is the work of artists in motion, engaged in a process that both bring to all of their work – one that uses spontaneity as a spur for creativity.

irenic003 is a cooperative effort by roger gerressen and his well known accomplices sinan alakus and ivano tetelepta. disc one is a collection of novio dub tribe tracks accompanied by an amazing remix by the incredibly talented udmo from australia. known for a string of well received and beautifully produced ep s on analogue attic, udmo took the original and did a nice stretched out rework for the early hours. on the second disc we find a few tracks from the vaults, two raw recordings by ivano tetelepta and roger gerressen and a track done by the labelboss himself..
